Abstract
Twitter is upgrading its direct messaging feature so you can message anyone, even if they don't follow you. If you want to profess your love to Taylor Swift but don't want the whole world to know, you're in luck: Previously, both users had to be following each other before they could direct message each other. CNet says users have to \opt in\ to the new feature, though, meaning if celebrities don't want to receive hundreds of messages from random people they don't follow, they don't have to. But Twitter sees it as a way for celebrities and large companies to respond to people who message them without having to permanently follow them. It'll make communicating on the web site quicker and more simple. The change comes as Twitter tries to draw more users to its site. It ended the fourth quarter in February with about 7 million fewer active users than expected.
