In het onderhavige rapport wordt verslag gedaan van een werkbezoek aan zes Posion Control Centers in de Verenigde Staten en Canada. Werkwijze en organisatie van deze centra worden gedetailleerd beschreven. Bijzondere Bijzondere aandacht wordt besteed aan taken op het gebied van preventie van vergiftigingen en aan taken op het gebied van directe informatie verstrekking aan het publiek. De situatie in de Verenigde Staten en in Canada wordt vergeleken met die in Nederland. Er wordt voorzichtig geconcludeerd dat een systeem van actieve preventie en directe voorlichting aan het publiek waarschijnlijk kan leiden tot kostenbesparingen in de gezondheidszorg, doordat minder aanspraak wordt gedaan op faciliteiten in de eerste en tweede lijn. Het verslag wordt afgerond met enkele aanbevelingen voor de toekomst van het Nationaal Vergiftigingen Informatie Centrum.
