Abstract
This study examines the process of publishing and perceiving the works of Vasyl Symonenko beyond the borders of Ukraine. The purpose of the article is to clarify the role of the Ukrainian diaspora, particularly the Canadian diaspora, in the preservation, popularization and interpretation of Symonenko's works under conditions of censorship. It also aims to address information gaps concerning the transnational dissemination of his poetry, its reception abroad and its influence on the formation of national consciousness of Ukrainians outside the Ukrainian SSR. The article highlights the Ukrainian diaspora’s critical role in preserving and promoting the poet’s legacy, which was suppression under Soviet censorship. The research draws on periodicals from the holdings of the Canadian-Ukrainian Library Center at the I. P. Kotliarevsky Poltava Regional Universal Scientific Library. These sources were analyzed to trace the dissemination of samizdat versions of Vasyl Symonenko's works. The study underscores the significance of publishing houses, civic initiatives, and the diaspora press in shaping Symonenko’s image as a symbol of truth and resistance. It concludes that, to a large extent, it was through the efforts of the diaspora that Symonenko’s poetry gained international recognition.
