Abstract
바하이교를 국내에 최초로 소개한 글은 1921년 9월 1일자 동아일보에 실린 "신종교 바하이 운동"이라는 짧은 기사였다. 6.25 전쟁 이후 바하이공동체가 형성되면서 1955년 한글로 된 최초의 바하이 소책자, 『현대의 신앙』이 '서울 바하이 그룹'에 의해 발간되었다. 그 이래 각종 백과사전류를 비롯하여 중동 관련 역사서, 종교학이나 이슬람 관련 서적, 특히 번역서 속에 바하이교에 대한 언급이 간헐적으로 발견되고, 또 앞에서 소개한 것처럼 '외래 신흥종교' 혹은 이슬람교에 속한 하나의 종파로 소개한 단편적인 글은 몇 편 있으나 바하이교를 독립적인 종교로 소개한 논문은 전무하다. \n바하이교에 대한 서구 학자들의 관심은 1880년대부터 1910년대까지 나름대로 활발한 모습을 보였다. 그러나 이후 소강상태에 접어들어 간헐적인 연구물 밖에 없다가 1970년대에 이르러 다시 관심이 상승하고 있다. 바하이교에 대한 관심이 상승한 데는 크게 두 가지 이유를 들 수 있을 것이다. 우선 바하이공동체의 양적, 질적 성장이 학자들의 눈에 띄게 된 것이다. 또 하나의 이유는 바하이공동체 내부에서 학문적인 역량을 갖춘 학자들이 늘어났다는 사실이다. 1974년 결성된 캐내다 바하이 학회(The Canadian Association for Baha'i Studies)가 이를 반영하고 있다. 앞에서 탁명환이 언급했듯이, 1979년 이란의 이슬람 혁명과 더불어 재개된 종교적 박해도 바하이교에 대한 외부 세계의 관심을 높이는데 일조를 했다.
