Abstract
카나다의 다민족주의라는 미묘한 문제에 들어가기에 앞서, 오늘날 그들의 현실을 이해하는데 필요한 몇가지 역사적 사실을 개괄하고자 한다. 계속된 식민 樞民과 그 결과로 형성된 카나다의 인구구성은 현재 카나다의 사회조직의 토대가 되고 있다. 원주민들, 또는 Amerindien들과 Inuit들의 정착민 peuple fondateur' 외에도, 16세기, 특히 17세기부터 이곳에 정착하기 시작해서 양자간의 갈등 때문에 끊임없이 입헌 논쟁을 주도했던 두 정착민들도 고려에 넣어야 한다. 강력한 제국주의 국가에 속해 있었던 영국과 프랑스계 주민들로부터 이중으로 식민 통치를 받은 카나다는 이중성을 뚜렷한 특징으로 지니게 되었다. 프랑스가 누벨 프랑스 Nouvelle - France의 포기 및 양도를 인정하는 파리 조약에 서명한 1763년 당시, 그 영토 안에는 단지 6만 5천 명의 인구만이 거주할 뿐이었다. 미국전쟁(1783-1785) 당시의 영국당원들과 아일랜드인, 프랑스인들의 유럽과 카나다의 개방정책이 18세기 말, 19세기 전반의 카나다 사회를 휩쓸었고, 그 결과 1867년 카나다는 이미 사실상의 이민국가였으며, 1880년부터 시작된 근대 이민의 물결은 이러한 특징을 더욱 강화시켰다.
