Contexte : Seuls professionnels de la santé habilités à administrer l’aide médicale à mourir (AMM) au Québec, les médecins se retrouvent, depuis 2015, dans un nouveau contexte législatif qui amène leur profession médicale à subir des changements majeurs au sein de leur pratique de soins de fin de vie. Objectifs : Explorer les facteurs de sens qui émergent de l’expérience vécue par les médecins administrant l’AMM afin de découvrir ce qui les amène à intégrer cette pratique dans leur continuum professionnel. Méthodologie : Nous avons sondé les parcours expérientiels de dix médecins ayant pratiqué minimalement une AMM sur l’ensemble du territoire du CIUSSS de l’Estrie. La recherche qualitative avec entretien semi-dirigé a été favorisée. La théorisation ancrée de Pierre Paillé (1994) a servi de méthode d’analyse. Résultats : L’analyse par théorisation ancrée nous a démontré que l’AMM est une démarche humaine qui demande du temps et des aptitudes sociales et où le savoir-être est essentiel. Nous avons découvert que le geste est situé aux frontières de l’identité personnelle et professionnelle. En somme, ce qui incite un médecin à participer à la démarche est son identité narrative qui est appuyée par les valeurs et le sens qu’il donne à son expérience vécue. Conclusion : L’AMM est un geste qui est lourd de sens et le processus est vécu différemment par chaque médecin, il est donc important de respecter le sens et les valeurs de chaque médecin, peu importe qu’il intègre ou pas l’AMM dans son curriculum professionnel.
