<p>L’objectif principal de ce mémoire de maîtrise est de reconstruire, à l’aide d’indicateurs dendrochronologiques, l’historique des fluctuations de l’hydraulicité depuis environ les 200 dernières années dans la région de la Jamésie, au Québec. Comme les registres instrumentaux servant à évaluer les apports en eau des réservoirs hydroélectriques de la région de la Baie James sont de courte durée (moins de 50 ans) et discontinus dans le temps et les stations d'enregistrement peu nombreuses et distribuées de façon sporadique, il est difficile d’évaluer si les variations observées lors de cette période (niveaux d’eau élevés prédominants entre 1963 et 1982 et niveaux d’eau bas entre 1983 et 2005) correspondent à des variations positives ou négatives autour d’une tendance séculaire ou à un réel changement de régime hydrologique. Pour répondre à cela, les rives de trois lacs de la région situés en marge de leur bassin versant respectifs ont été échantillonnées (Miron, Mirabelli et Rodayer) afin de construire deux chronologies : une chronologie d’abrasion glacielle et une chronologie de début de séquence de bois de réaction. La cartographie et la segmentation des rives a également été réalisée. Les résultats montrent qu’il y a eu une augmentation de la fréquence de cicatrices glacielles et de début de séquence de bois de réaction dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle et la chronologie d’abrasion glacielle est bien corrélée aux variables hydrologiques pour la période 1960-2010. Il est donc possible de conclure que le reste des chronologies sont valables. Subséquemment, les résultats de ce mémoire sont cohérents avec la littérature scientifique et l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’amplitude des apports mesurés depuis 1963 soit de l’ordre des fluctuations historiques régionales, mais s’inscrivant dans une tendance générale à la hausse à l’échelle des deux derniers siècles semble être fondée. Les données produites serviront à modéliser des scénarios régionaux sur l’évolution de l’hydraulicité et les impacts anticipés sur les différents écosystèmes terrestres et aquatiques, de même que sur la gestion des grands ensembles hydro électriques appartenant au complexe hydro-électrique de la Baie-James.<br /><br />The main objective of this Master’s thesis is to use dendrochronological and geomorphological indicators of water level variations to assess water supply trends over the last two centuries in the High-Boreal region of Quebec. Instrumental records for the assessment of water supply to hydroelectric reservoirs in Quebec are of short duration (less than 50 years), and the recordings are limited to a few stations across this vast territory. A comprehensive review of hydrographs showed predominantly high water levels between 1963 and 1982, followed by low water levels between 1983 and 2005, which became a real concern for Hydro-Quebec. This study aims to reconstruct the years of potentially high hydrological events across a latitudinal transect in the James Bay area. The hypothesis is that these events correspond to variations in water supply around a secular trend, instead of a real hydrological regime change. Laskeshore systems of three lakes distributed over 400 km of latitude were studied (Miron, Mirabelli and Rodayer) in order to construct two types of chronologies: recent history of seasonal ice floods and that of shore hydro-dynamic disturbances occurring during the ice-free period. Based on detailed shoreline mapping and geomorphic segmentation according to exposure, chronologies of the two sets of events revealed an increase in the frequency of disturbances during the second half of the 20th century. The chronology of ice abrasion correlates with hydrologic variables for the 1960-2010 period. The results are consistent with the rising trend of spring and summer water levels outlined by several studies in Northern Quebec and also show synchronous variations among the studied lakes. Our dataset helps improve models of regional water supplies and assessments of their anticipated effects on the various terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It represents a timely contribution to the understanding of climate change impacts on water resources for the management of hydroelectric power generation.</p>
