Assessment of the health status of neonatal dairy replacement and veal calves

Abstract
In this thesis the health status of neonatal dairy replacement and veal calves in the first week of life was investigated. Between January and December 2008, a study was conducted with 2,204 neonatal calves from 16 herds in southwestern Ontario. Serum total protein results indicated 20.2% of calves had failure of passive transfer of immunity (< 5.2 g/dL). Passive transfer was associated with gender, first and total colostrum volumes, season of birth, assistance at birth, morbidity and mortality. Whole blood selenium values in heifer calves varied greatly by farm and were associated with season of birth and multiple births. In both calf- and herd-level analysis, selenium injections were associated with increased selenium concentrations in calves. Characteristics for haptoglobin, magnesium, hemoglobin and hematocrit in the calves have been described. This study has established several benchmark measures for neonatal calves in Ontario and has generated hypotheses for future research.
