Abstract
Viktor Ullmann (1898-1944) was a successful and established composer of his time, yet he remains widely unknown.An Austrian of Jewish heritage, he was silenced as a result of his imprisonment in the hybrid ghetto-concentration camp at Theresienstadt and subsequent death at Auschwitz.Piano Sonatas 5, 6, and 7, written during his detention, exemplify Ullmann's musical language-a distinctive integration of tonality and atonality characterized by elements of tradition and modernity.His training had been closely associated with Arnold Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School, however for his music Ullmann consciously steered away from a complete lack of tonality.This dissertation will serve to illuminate the value and relevance of Ullmann's Late Piano Sonatas, unique works that should make appealing additions to the landscape of twentieth-century solo piano repertoire.
