Abstract
Teoksessa esitellään ja arvioidaan amerikansuomalaisen sosialistin August Wesleyn (1887‒1941/1942) elämänvaiheita 1900-luvun alkupuolen poliittisesti kuohuvina vuosikymmeninä. Kirjan ensimmäisessä osassa seurataan nuoren Augustin aikuistumista 1904‒1917 amerikansuomalaisessa siirtolaisyhteisössä, hänen vaikeita ihmissuhteitaan ja poliittista etsintäänsä moniin eri suuntiin repeävässä Amerikan sosialistisessa liikkeessä. Elämäkerran toisessa osassa avataan Wesleyn Suomen vuosia, johtajuutta punakaartissa ja pakenemista sekasortoiselle Neuvosto-Venäjälle ja Muurmannin legioonaan 1917‒1919. Marraskuussa 1919 Wesley pakeni Viroon, jossa hän toimi virkamiehenä ja journalistina. Saksan hyökätessä Viroon, Wesley siirtyi rajan yli Neuvostoliittoon. Moninkertainen maanpakolainen August Wesley, kulkuri ja politrukki, nähtiin viimeisen kerran Leningradissa kesällä 1941. Kirja kertoo yhden sosialistin vaiheikkaan ja rikkaan tarinan, mutta kuvaa myös taloudellisten pakolaisten yleisempääkin kohtaloa ja työläismiesten raskasta ja levotonta aatteellisen kodin etsintää ja vaikeutta asettua aloilleen ylikiihottuneen poliittis-sotilaallisen toiminnan jälkeen.
