Abstract

This project compared the water treatment ability of two stormwater retention ponds in Regina, SK. The south pond was built in a mature neighborhood with the primary function of detaining stormwater runoff during heavy rainfall events. The north pond was built in a new neighborhood and was a constructed wetland built not only to detain stormwater runoff, but also to improve its quality before being discharged into a nearby creek. The north pond was planned to allow growth of vegetation and other aquatic species. The paper compares performance in terms of alkalinity, total hardness, total dissolved solids and nutrient levels.
