Abstract
Utilizando el Nuevo Historicismo como enfoque crítico, esta tesis pretende ofrecer una visión general del fenómeno de la brujería que, desde la Antigüedad y a lo largo de toda la Edad Media, va añadiendo elementos hasta convertirse en un discurso que, en el Renacimiento, compartirá características similares. \nTras analizar las características generales del discurso de la brujería en Europa, se estudiarán los elementos específicos en la Inglaterra de principios del siglo XVI, con la llegada del rey escocés Jacobo VI al trono inglés como Jacobo I.\n\nA través del estudio de la representación de Elizabeth Sawyer (una mujer acusada de brujería y ejecutada en 1621) en dos narrativas de la época, el panfleto de Henry Goodcole The Wonderful Discovery of Elizabeth Sawyer y la obra de teatro The Witch of Edmonton, escrita por William Rowley, Thomas Dekker y John Ford, se analizará como pierde su identidad para convertirse en la "bruja", un elemento subversivo que los mecanismo de control dentro del discurso oficial se encargarán de demonizar.
