Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

On 24 December 1941 the Free French peacefully liberated the tiny island colony of St. Pierre and Miquelon from Vichy France. Although the islands had little military value, I argue in this thesis that gaining control over St. Pierre and Miquelon was a major victory for the Free French that helped Charles de Gaulle establish the legitimacy of his fledgling resistance movement. Following the liberation of the colony both Vichy supporters and the American State Department contested the legality and the legitimacy of the Free French invasion and demanded the islands returned to Vichy France. The diplomatic conflict that ensued eventually forced the governments and populations of Canada and the United States to acknowledge that the Free French held a legitimate claim over the sovereignty of the French nation and was a significant - but largely unknown - turning point in the history of the movement.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
