A utilização, por diversos atores sociais, das tecnologias da Informação e da comunicação (TIC) reconfigurou modelos “tradicionais” da relação entre comunidades pela construção de espaços virtuais (Proulx e Latzko-Toth, 2000). As dimensões identitárias e de cidadania encontram nestes “espaços” uma potencialidade para a expressão de formas de pensar, sentir e agir geradas no contexto específico das migrações transnacionais onde as lógicas de aculturação caracterizam o contexto de uma comunicação intercultural (Bolter e Grusin, 2000; Ferreira, 2009). Nesta pesquisa procuramos compreender os mecanismos socioculturais que estão na origem de iniciativas de “virtualização” do espaço relacional entre os Açores e o Canada, tanto as iniciativas dos descendentes de emigrantes açorianos no Canadá (jovens) como as respostas associativas ou institucionais açorianas tendo em vista compreender como a produção de conteúdos web se articula com os processos identitários mediados socioculturalmente através de outros suportes mediáticos (Lalanda-Gonçalves 1984). Para a análise deste processo iremos dar particular ênfase à diáspora açoriana do Canadá e aos websites das associações açorianas e blogues pessoais que têm congregado açorianos e luso-canadianos assim como às iniciativas políticas e institucionais e associativas açorianas orientadas para as comunidades emigradas visando o reforço dos laços comunitários e a construção de uma zona de contacto (Pratt: 2003).
