Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Volcanic eruptions are often the result of the combination of deep dynamics of magma ascenting and processes found in the sub-superficial part of the volcanic apparatus. In the case of volcanoes characterized by fumarolic activity and widespread superficial hydrothermal alteration, some eruptions may produce deposits rich in hydrothermalized lithic fragments and subordinate or absent juvenile material. Furthermore, hydrothermal fluids with high contents of elements of magmatic origin transported by them (Cu, Au, As, Sb, Zn, Pb, etc.) can be directly involved in these events. The products of these eruptions can therefore preserve evidence of the presence of elements present in magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, useful for obtaining information on the magmatic system in degassing but also for the potential implications for the understanding of mineralizing processes around shallow magmatic bodies. The main objective of this work was to investigate the presence of elements of magmatic origin and potentials transported by hydrothermal fluids in phreatic eruptions (Breccia de Fiore, 1873-1876 DC; Breccia di Commenda, about XIII century) that occurred in the volcano La Fossa (Vulcano Island) which involved the hydrothermal system. By way of comparison, samples of breccia deposits rich in lithic components of the Santa Ana volcano (Salvador) were also analyzed. The study made use of volcanological field analysis for the characterization and interpretation of product deposits and geochemical and petrographic analysis for the collection and interpretation of the concentration data of the elements that are typically transported by hydrothermal fluids. The deposits of the Breccia de Fiore unit, characterized for the first time in this thesis work, emerge mainly within erosion channels on the north-west slope of the La Fossa cone and occupy a stratigraphic position among the explosive sequences of Upper Pietre Cotte and the deposits of 1888-1890. They have a massive, clasto-sustained structure with a low content of fine matrix, a maximum thickness of 40-50 cm, a low degree of granulometric selection and contain abundant lapilli and hydrothermalized blocks. Component and petrographic analyzes revealed that the samples consisted mainly of moderately altered, dense to poorly vesiculated lava clasts of intermediate composition between trachyte and rhyolite, containing mainly plagioclase and clinopyroxene phenocrysts also present as microliths in a partially glassy groundmass. The clasts present moderate alteration, mostly incipient and limited to some external portions of the clasts. The deposits of the Breccia di Commenda have a greater dispersion than those of the Breccia de Fiore and show high thicknesses (up to 3 meters), from massive to inversely graded for lithics, low degree of granulometric selection, vertical degassing pipes and blocks up to 50 cm in diameter immersed in abundant ash matrix. The components of the Breccia di Commenda differ from those of the Breccia de Fiore for a more intense and more pervasive alteration of the clasts, often associated with oxidation patinas that make it difficult to recognize the original structures. The chemical analyses of the major elements were carried out with the ICP-OES technique at the Actlabs laboratories (Canada), while the trace elements were determined in ICP-MS using a Perkin-Elmer NexION 300 × spectrometer (at DST-UNIPI). Mercury was analysed using a Milestone DMA-80 (Direct Mercury Analyzer) instrument also at DST-UNIPI. The chemical analyses of the major elements carried out on particle size fractions <63 microns show more advanced compositions for the samples of Breccia de Fiore (latite-trachyte) than those of Breccia di Commenda (latite). The comparison of the patterns of the REEs of the fine fraction of the breccia deposits with the literature data on unaltered volcanic rocks and on the hydrothermal alteration facies allowed us to make hypotheses on the type and intensity of the alteration at the time of the eruptive events studied. The enrichment factors calculated with respect to equivalent fresh La Fossa rocks taken from the literature describe enrichments in Pb, Mo, Tl, Bi, Ni, Zn, Cu, As, Ag, Se, Mo and REE for both breccias. The analyses of the mercury contents indicate that Hg is more enriched in the fine matrix of the Breccia di Commenda (up to 49 ppb) than the samples of the Breccia de Fiore (maximum 11 ppb). The results of this work have shown that in passive degassing volcanoes, such as that of La Fossa di Vulcano, the geochemical imprint of the transport of elements by magmatic-hydrothermal fluids can be recognized both in the "active" part of the system (fluids hydrothermal, fumaroles, etc.), but also indirectly from the study of the products of some explosive eruptions of the phreatic-hydrothermal type that occur in these environments.
