Le MELCC souhaite se munir d'un protocole de détection de collerettes de bentonite dans les puits d'eau souterraine afin d'identifier les puits où ce matériau scellant a été omis lors de l'installation. Pour ce faire, l'utilisation d'une sonde spectrale à rayons gamma est envisagée puisqu'elle a la capacité de mesurer la radiation gamma issue de la bentonite, et peut être employée dans un tubage d'acier, au-dessus et en-dessous de la nappe phréatique.Une sonde QL40-SGR de Mount Sopris Instruments a été utilisée pour investiguer 18 puits d'eau souterraine du Québec dont la moitié est aménagée avec une collerette de bentonite. Le traitement de données du spectre de rayonnement gamma a permis de déterminer les concentrations en K et Th en fonction de la profondeur de chacun de ces puits.Il a été démontré que différentes populations argileuses peuvent être idenfitiées sur les isocontours de l'estimation de la densité de probabilité des concentrations en Th et K d'un puits. Ces populations sont issues des formations géologiques argileuses présentes au tour du puits, et peuvent révéler la présence d'une collerette de bentonite par une population supplémentaire à celles attendues. De plus, l'utilisation d'un algorithme de partitionnement des données en k-moyennes permet d'étudier la relation entre l'appartenance d'un point de mesure à une population argileuse et sa profondeur dans le puits. Un diagnostic concernant la présence ou l'absence d'une collerette de bentonite peut ainsi être posé dans deux cas sur trois, et ce diagnostic est réussi dans plus de 92 % des cas. L'utilisation d'un algorithme dont le partitionnement est basé sur la densité des points de mesure tel que Ordering Points to Identify Clustering Structure(OPTICS) pourrait permettre une amélioration du nombre de diagnostics posés.
