Los bloques transportados o movidos por la energía de grandes olas han sido objeto de investigaciones en diferentes zonas geográficas del planeta, incluidas algunas áreas del Caribe. En Cuba, otros autores han identificado sectores costeros con la presencia de estas acumulaciones; no obstante, un proyecto insertado en el Programa Nacional “Caracterización Integral de la Geología de Cuba”, permitió realizar una actualización de estos depósitos en zonas costeras. El principal objetivo de este trabajo consistió en elaborar un nuevo mapa nacional con la distribución espacial de los huracanolitos. La importancia de este resultado radica en la conexión con los eventos de oleaje extremo que han impactado en la costa cubana, tanto en el pasado como en el presente, tema que, al mismo tiempo, tiene estrecha relación con la Tarea Vida, especialmente con la Prevención de Riesgos de Desastres en el litoral costero de Cuba.
