Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

\n \nMacroalgae are the basis of rocky intertidal ecosystems. They are structuring and dominating species characterized by high biomass, which offer protection, food, and create favourable habitats for multiple marine organisms. They also support the recovery of the community after disturbances and stresses. These macroalgae face multiple physical disturbances, such as wave action and semi-diurnal tides. Moreover, in the mid-intertidal shore in St Lawrence (North-East Canada), severe ice-scouring influences and structures benthic intertidal communities by removing a certain amount of macroalgae during winter and spring. In the context of climate change, it is more important than ever to improve knowledge on community resistance against ice-scouring and community productivity. To better understand the impact of ice scouring on rocky shores, our study aimed to characterize the temporal dynamic of intertidal macroalgal productivity of the St Lawrence. Specific objective was to measure the individual growth of fucoids. Finally, this study tends to evaluate carbon dynamics generated by rocky intertidal communities. Thus, three different abrasion levels were identified (short-term recovery level (less than one year), mid-term (two and more years) and controls (no abrasion in the last two years)) and algal recovery, biomass, growth, and primary productivity of Fucus distichus subsp. edentatus were measured during summer 2021. Firstly, our study of growth dynamic has shown that the individual growth rate diminishes with the length (expressed as a function of age) of the algae, as little individuals (0 to 3 cm) have a ten times higher growth rate than big individuals (more than 30 cm) (respectively 60 % and 6 % of growth each month). Then, according to our expectations, we observed a primary production of ~2 WWkg m-2 yr-1 in Mid-term recovery level zones, which is the same that in the Controls, and 300 g m-2 yr-1 in Short-term, which is 6 to 7 time lower. This can also mean that one-seventh of the primary production of the intertidal rocky shore macroalgae is done by algae in their first grow season. On the other hand, with a production to biomass (P/B ratio) four-time higher than undisturbed zones, the Short-term recovery zone are of importance for the carbon construction on shores. Those observations highlight the important role of young macroalgae on ice-scoured rocky shores and on the dynamic of this complex ecosystem.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
