Les plants d'épinette blanche (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) de fortes dimensions cultivés au Québec présentent fréquemment un développement racinaire insuffi₁sant (taux de rejet -14 %). Deux dispositifs expérimentaux ont été installés en pépinière pour évaluer l'effet des propriétés physico-chimiques de douze différents substrats sur le développement, la nutrition minérale et la capacité photosynthétique des plants. Les meilleures croissances des racines et des parties aériennes ont été observées chez les substrats dont le coefficient de diffusivité relative des gaz variait entre 0,005 et 0,015 [formule, voir le PDF] et dont la masse volumique apparente sèche se situait entre 0,10 et 0,11 g/cm3 . De plus, des relations significatives ont été observées entre la croissance et le pH, la capacité d'échange cationique et la concentration en magnésium, laquelle fut plus élevée dans les substrats qui contenaient de la vermiculite. Les propriétés du substrat ont également eu un effet significatif sur la masse des nouvelles racines produites lors du test de capacité de croissance des racines réalisé en conditions contrôlées.
