Les discours véhiculés à propos d'Internet présentent ce média comme étant une innovation majeure du nouveau millénaire. Internet décuplerait les possibilités d'échange et de partage de l'information. Ainsi, il restructure et conditionne des pans entiers de l'économie (commerce électronique, musique, ... ). Néanmoins, les plus grandes promesses concernent le savoir et l'échange d'information. L'apprentissage en ligne ou le E-learning est le fer de lance de cet univers du savoir incarné par Internet. Des espoirs sont suscités par cette nouvelle formule d'apprentissage, notamment une autonomie et une flexibilité plus grandes du côté des apprenants, combinées à des possibilités jamais égalées en matière d'apprentissage. Le Québec développe de plus en plus de programmes d'enseignement en ligne. Ces cours s'appuient dans leur mode de fonctionnement sur une série d'outils multimédia et de communication, dont Internet. Le présent mémoire rend compte d'une recherche exploratoire sur l'usage des potentialités de communication offertes par Internet en matière de formation à distance. Il le fait en quelque sorte à chaud en ciblant une sélection de quatre cours offerts par l'Université Laval d'une part et la TéléUniversité de l'autre. L'analyse des documents d'accompagnement, sur support papier et en ligne, de ces cours est complétée par l'observation des contenus et procédures sur les sites Internet, et par des entrevues semi-dirigées avec le? artisans de ces cours, par ailleurs considérés comme des autorités en la matière au Québec.
