"Elles ne se marièrent pas et eurent beaucoup d'enfants" : analyse du discours institutionnel traitant de la mère célibataire au Québec au milieu du XXe siècle

Abstract
Le sort réservé aux mères célibataires (ainsi qu'aux femmes en général) est tributaire de la société dans laquelle elles évoluent. Au Québec, au milieu du XXe siècle, c'est principalement le clergé catholique qui influence leurs conditions de vie grâce à son pouvoir régulateur en matière de morale ainsi que par leur prise en charge par le biais de son réseau institutionnel d'assistance sociale. L'analyse de quatre énoncés institutionnels (trois thèses de maîtrise en service social et un texte de la Sauvegarde de l'Enfance), faite à l'aide d'une méthode linguistique, nous montre que ceux-ci présentent la même vision de la mère célibataire quant à sa personnalité, son autonomie et, à une exception près, son degré de responsabilité. Ces résultats, malgré une légère dissidence, confirment l'hypothèse d'un discours dominant, prôné par le clergé, qui ne souffre pas à ce moment de contestation ouverte dans les milieux universitaires.
