ABSTRACT: The Meso-Neoproterozoic Grenvillian Orogeny offers and excellent opportunity to study complex tectonic systems, as well as deformation and exhumation processes that regulate the evolution of major continent-continent collisions. This orogeny, preserved in the Grenville Province in Quebec and Ontario, is especially important for the understanding of tectonic processes as it is one of the largest orogenic belts of earth’s history. The Grenville Orogen, considered as a long-hot orogen, is characterized by two main orogenic phases. The first phase, the Ottawan phase (1090-1020 Ma), would have affected the Allochthonous Belt, which is composed of pericratonic and exotic rocks accreted to Laurentia. The Ottawan phase is characterized by the flow of hot and ductile crust under an orogenic plateau, high grade metamorphism, syntectonic magmatism and crustal scale shortening. The second phase, the Rigolet phase (1005-980 Ma) is marked by deformation and metamorphism in the Parautochthonous Belt, which is composed of the Laurentian basement and its metasedimentary cover, reworked by channel flow episodes or fore-land thrusting. In order to understand the tectono-metamorphic evolution and the exhumation processes, petrographic (Chapter 3), geochronologic (Chapter 4) and thermobarometric (Chapter 5) studies based on field data were conducted in the central Grenville Province, a critical segment of the orogen. The data presented in this thesis and in prior studies allow to propose a new tectonic model for combined segments of the Allochthonous (Manicouagan Imbricate Zone or MIZ) and the Parautochthonous (Gagnon Terrane or TG) belts. The results for the Gagnon Terrane indicate high-grade metamorphism, with possible partial melt, at pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions of approximately 700 °C and 12.5 kbar at ca. 1004 Ma to 983 Ma. The Allochthon Boundary Thrust in the study area would have undergone metamorphism without partial melting, at maximum P-T conditions of 740 ± 60 °C and 12.5 ± 1.5 kbar à ca. 1020 Ma, which was followed by titanite recrystallization during a late deformation event at ca. 982 Ma, at P-T conditions of 660 ± 30 °C and 11.5 ± 1 kbar. These results, combined with the regional data, indicate a synchronous exhumation of the Manicouagan Imbricate Zone by ductile extrusion and the Gagnon Terrane by channel flow. The Manicouagan Imbricate Zone would have been put in place in a partially melted and deeply buried Gagnon Terrane. The partially molten TG rocks would have been less competent and would have been easily deformed in order to make room for the MIZ, which would have generated the orogen transverse folds of the TG in the study area. Furthermore, this study documented a pre-grenvillian age at ca. 1.8-1.9 Ga for the TG in the study area, indicating a detrital origin for some zircons, coming from the Labrador Trough. This study also presents data for a sample collected at the tectonic intersection between the ZIM, the TG, and the Hart-Jaune Terrane (THJ), a terrane considered as the orogenic lid that would have escaped grenvillian metamorphism. The results indicate high-grade metamorphism and a Pinwarian age at ca. 1597 Ma. The Pinwarian Orogen, which would have been early in the area, would be a great candidate to explain the results. Nevertheless, the evidence for partial melting and the high-grade P-T conditions, with peak conditions of approximately 860 °C and 13 kbar seem too high for a localized event. The high-grade metamorphism, which is similar to the one documented in the ZIM, indicates that the sample could be part of the ZIM, and that the zircons did not react during the metamorphism, or, that the zircons are detrital.
