Abstract
Inserted in the ascetic drift that took the narrative in the late sixteenth century, Trabajos del vicio (1680), a profane novel written by the Augustinian father Simón de Castelblanco, represents a paradigmatic example of the state of the last prose of the Baroque. In the light of contemporary works such as Engaños de mu-jeres by Miguel de Montreal and Engaños y desengaños del profano amor, in this paper I will study the ethical-aesthetic binomial of delectare et prodesse, codified by Horatian poetics, in the novel by the Augustinian friar. As will be seen in the article, Castelblanco, in an eagerness for the clarity of the didactic-moral discourse, in line with the postulates of Saint Augustine, rescues for the composition of his work ele-ments of the popular sermon and resorts to the fictional exemplum as the preferred form of prodesse for the demonstration of doctrine
