Abstract
A highly–regarded Indigenous playwright, author, and journalist – Drew Hayden Taylor – will be speaking at the Trash Talkin’ Conference, a pop-culture event organized by the English Students’ Association at the U of R. “We wanted to widen the focus of our conference to include an Indigenous author. It's important for students to be aware of and appreciate Indigenous literature,” explains Harrison Otis, in second-year master’s student in English and secretary of the English Students’ Association. Taylor, from the Curve Lake First Nations in Ontario, is an award-winning playwright. He has written 30 books and is also a journalist, short-story writer, novelist, and TV scriptwriter. He has served as the Writer-In-Residence at Michigan, Ryerson, and Wilfred Laurier universities. His play, Cottagers and Indians, is being performed at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre until March 25.
