Abstract
The essential notions that any professional in the field of Health Sciences should know in relation to the processes of generation, dissemination and use of information are described, focusing on the needs and uses of information among students, residents and medical professionals. The characteristics of the Internet as a source of information and the process of searching for information in multidisciplinary (Web of Science and Scopus) and specialised (Medline and Embase) databases are presented, describing the documentary tools and the existing criteria for evaluating the quality of the information identified. The characteristics of scientific documents are detailed, the role of citation in Science, the defining features of the main citation styles (Vancouver and APA) and the formative and performance paradigm of Evidence-Based Medicine.
