Au cours du mois précédant les premières élections de la Confédération canadienne en 1867, la presse conservatrice mène une campagne intense afin de convaincre les électeurs ouvriers de la circonscription électorale de Montréal-Est de ne pas voter pour Médéric Lanctôt, un jeune candidat « rouge » qui prône l’indépendance du Canada et l’association démocratique du capital et du travail. Cette presse est en effet très critique des électeurs de cette circonscription qui envisagent de se ranger sous le drapeau «de la révolte contre la société et l’humanité tout entière» plutôt que sous celui du candidat George-Étienne Cartier, un homme politique ayant toujours servi «la grande cause de l’intelligence, de la respectabilité et du vrai patriotisme». L’amertume de la presse conservatrice est palpable au lendemain de la courte victoire électorale de Cartier. Elle regrette qu’un des grands hommes politiques du pays ait eu à s’abaisser pour affronter ce qu’elle perçoit comme une populace urbaine excitée par un démagogue socialiste (Montpetit, 2003: 318). Comment, donc, expliquer cette irruption étonnante de la classe ouvrière de Montréal-Est dans les affaires politiques du pays?
