A Les plus anciens botanistes ont toujours reconnu, clans l'Amérique septentrionale, l'existence de deux arbres que l'on peut rapporter au genre Picea établi par Link.Ce sont YAbies aîba, Michaux, et YAbies nigra, Poiret.(Abies denticulata, Michaux).Cependant ces deux espèces ont presque toujours été confondues l'une avec l'autre, parce qu'elles ont été mal définies; quelques auteurs, ne les considérant que comme deux variétés du même type, les ont rapportées à une même espèce.Ces con- sidérations nous ont engagé à étudier ces arbres dans tous leurs détails, et à faire l'histoire complète de ce groupe d'arbres, qui offre d'ailleurs le plus grand intérêt.On connaît en Canada trois arbres sous le nom d'Épi - nettes : ce sont l'Épinette blanche, l'Épinette noire et l'Épinette grise ; nous allons les décrire successivement.Comme l'Épinette rouge appartient à un genre différent, au genre Lariz, il n'en sera nullement question dans ce travail.PICEA, Link.Feuilles persistantes, solitaires, entourant régu- lièrement les branches et les rameaux, tétragones, raides, marquées, sur les deux faces, de lignes blanches, résultant de l'arrangement en séries linéaires de nombreux stomates ; fleurs mâles vers le sommet des rameaux de l'année ; cônes terminaux ou axillaires sur les rameaux, penchés ou inclinés vers la terre, persistants ; graines se détachant, avec le temps, de la base de l'aile membraneuse, dépourvues de canaux résinifères.Bois presque blanc, sans distinction d'aubier et de bois parfait ; conduits résinifères dans le bois ; cel- lules des rayons médullaires sans grandes ponctuations ; groupe de cellules cubiques lignifiées dans l'écorce la plus âgée.
