Attraverso l’approccio del corso di vita si promuove, sostanzialmente, l’importanza di sviluppare ipotesi interpretative basate sugli intrecci personalizzati e dinamici, in grado di articolare i diversi periodi della vita individuale, secondo modalità significativamente diverse. Invece di continuare a descrivere e pensare il corso di vita come una serie di stadi stabili e standardizzati (Elder, 1994), il ricercatore dovrebbe occuparsi anche di identificare i periodi di stabilità e di mutamento che attraversano e caratterizzano la biografia degli individui, così come anche i punti di svolta che li caratterizzano.
