Le plus grand mérite à la théorie fort médiatisée de « la montée de la classe créative » de Richard Florida est peut-être bien celui d’avoir attiré l’attention des élites publiques et privées sur la part du culturel dans les réalités économiques nouvelles des sociétés hautement industrialisées et urbanisées. Pour Florida, non seulement une main-d’œuvre qualifiée et créative est aujourd’hui l’acteur essentiel du développement économique des villes, ce sont en outre des facteurs culturels qui détermineraient pour une bonne part la capacité des territoires d'attirer, de générer et de retenir cette force nouvelle de travail. Or, le succès remporté par cette théorie est aujourd’hui proportionnel à la vigueur des critiques émises à son endroit. Pour voir comment il est possible de faire la part des choses dans ce débat, ce texte se propose de mettre à profit les premiers enseignements d’une recherche empirique en cours menée à Montréal (Canada) sur le thème de la Nouvelle économie et des « emplois créatifs ». L’exposé des partis pris théoriques et pratiques de cette recherche, ainsi que l’exploitation des résultats préliminaires permettront, par la même occasion, de revenir sur les notions aujourd’hui convergentes de compétitivité et d’attractivité territoriales.
