Abstract
Kavala, İstanbul-Selanik arasında ulaşım yolları üzerinde yer alan, konumu, kalesi, limanı ile önemli bir şehirdir. İlk çağlardan günümüze kadar ulaşabilen tarihi ve kültürel zenginliklerinin yanı sıra, doğal çekicilikleri ile de turistik potansiyeli olan bir merkezdir. Kavala, Mayıs ayından Ekim sonuna kadar denize girilebilen uygun iklim özellikleri, şehre yakın plajlarının yanı sıra, turistler için birçok su sporu, yelken, binicilik, parkur, tırmanma vb. spor aktiviteleri de sunan doğal cazibe merkezidir. Kavala eski şehir merkezi çoğunluğu yaz aylarında olmak üzere çok çeşitli kültürel aktiviteye ev sahipliği yapar. Philippi, Wood Water, Uluslararası Cosmopolis vb. festivallerde dans ve müzik grupları, sinema ve katılımcı ülkeler kendi geleneksel milli mutfaklarını sergiler. Kavala, Antik çağdan, Helenistik ve Roma dönemlerinden kalma tarihi eserlerin bulunduğu Philippi Arkeolojik Alanı, kalesi, müzeleri, kiliseleri ile de önemli bir tarihi mirasa sahiptir. Osmanlı dönemine ait eserlerin birçoğu asli hüviyetinin dışında hizmet verse de varlığını koruyabilenler arasında, Kanuni döneminde inşa edilen su kemeri, Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa Külliyesi, İbrahim Paşa ve Halil Bey camileri gibi tarihi ve kültürel yapılar sayılabilir.
