The objectives of the research were (1) to determine which of three different characteristics (contrast, texture and manipulation) of a foraging substrate hens find most attractive, (2) to better understand the causal factors for foraging, (3) to investigate the extent to which locomotion is an essential component of foraging. Using substrates of small quartz pebbles it was shown in Experiment 1 that hens preferred manipulable to fixed substrates. In Experiment 2 it was shown that depriving hens of the opportunity to forage increased the amount of foraging behaviour in a decagon runway whereas increasing hunger did not. In Experiment 3 it was shown that locomotion during foraging was easily discouraged by making hens "work" in order to move to a new section of the decagon runway; other elements of foraging also declined in this treatment. The results suggest that foraging is an important behaviour pattern that has causal factors different from those governing hunger.
