Le souffle des grands Totems esse.ca/fr/le-souffle-des-grands-totemsLe souffle des grands Totems À vue d'aigle, la Côte Nord-Ouest de l'Océan Pacifique est bel et bien ce coin du continent où règnent l'Oiseau-Tonnerre, l'Orque (Killer Whale) et le Corbeau.Venu à Vancouver pour participer au colloque Aboriginal Discussion: the Native Art in the Art Gallery à la Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG), j'ai traversé sur l'île.De Victoria à Tofino après un passage au parc des pétroglyphes sacrés Kinomagewapkong de Nanaimo, je suis passé voir les grands Totems à Victoria puis j'ai filé jusqu'à Tofino.Les pétroglyphes sont les assises d'un art autochtone environnemental originel.On retrouve de tels sites sur la Côte Nord du Québec (Nisula chez les Innus de Betsiamites), ainsi qu'à Peterborough (Ontario) en territoire ojibwe.J'en ramène trois constats de l'imaginaire amérindien de l'Ouest : omniprésence des grands Totems sur le territoire, vivacité de l'esprit mythologique des animaux et un art amérindien actuel sorti de l'ombre, s'inscrivant dans les institutions et le marché de l'art.
