Certaines recherches récentes ont montré que les perceptions de soutien d’un jeune à l’égard de son mentor interagissent avec les perceptions de soutien parental dans la prédiction des stratégies d’adaptation qu’il adoptera en situation de stress. Peu d’études se sont toutefois intéressées à décrire les liens bidirectionnels et longitudinaux que ces perceptions entretiennent entre elles et avec les stratégies d’adaptation de l’enfant. En utilisant les données d’une étude longitudinale des programmes Grands Frères Grandes Soeurs du Canada, la présente étude visait précisément cet objectif. Des analyses d’équations structurelles sur des données rapportées par les enfants mentorés à 4 moments différents de leur participation à ce programme ont montré que les perceptions de soutien en mentorat sont prédites par les perceptions de soutien maternel, mais seulement au début de la relation de mentorat. Après contrôle de ces perceptions initiales, les perceptions de soutien maternel et les perceptions de soutien en mentorat apportent des contributions uniques à la prédiction des stratégies d’adaptation des jeunes, mais seulement chez les filles. Les résultats sont discutés à la lumière des prémisses de la théorie développementale du soutien social et de l’approche systémique du mentorat ainsi que de leur apport pour le développement des programmes Grands-Frères Grande Soeurs du Canada.
