Questo studio tratta l'evoluzione della previdenza italiana dal punto di vista del pilastro pubblico e la nascita e l'evoluzione del pilastro privato, con un occhio particolare rivolto alle normative, al ruolo del Tfr, alle novità proposte nell'ambito fiscale e una panoramica sui tipi di fondi pensione presenti attualmente in Italia compresa di dati recenti riguardanti l'adesione degli italiani alla previdenza complementare e i rendimenti delle rispettive macroclassi di fondi. Viene effettuata un'analisi di tipo quantitativo dei paesi OCSE e in particolare di quattro paesi mondiali (Australia, Canada, Cile e Germania) scelti dall'autore sulla base delle caratteristiche dei sistemi previdenziali da questi adottati, concludendosi con un confronto tra il sistema italiano e quello dei paesi proposti specialmente per quanto riguarda il pilastro privato. Si fa particolare attenzione a come i paesi proposti hanno impostato l'assetto previdenziale (quindi a come nei programmi di sicurezza sociale il settore privato si lega allo Stato), nonchè ai regimi di tassazione previsti nella previdenza complementare e all'asset allocation impiegata dei fondi pensione.
