ABSTRACT The mining industry, while crucial to the Canadian and Quebec economies, generates considerable environmental disturbance, particularly through mine waste such as waste rock. The rehabilitation of storage areas for this type of mine waste, required by Quebec regulations, presents an opportunity to restore the ecological services present prior to environmental disturbance. This thesis explores the ecological restoration of waste rock in a boreal context, focusing on the use of Ramial Chipped Wood (RCW) to improve the conditions of these substrates and facilitate colonization by forest species and tree planting. Two in situ experimental setups, designed in randomized complete blocks to test several organic matter input treatments (RCW mulch and topsoil), combined with methodological approaches in ecology, hydrogeology, metagenomics and biostatistics allowed to study revegetation approaches on waste rock deposits at the Lapa mine site in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Research has shown that RCW mulch, particularly willow mulch, improves the microclimatic properties of barren rock substrates, encouraging the colonization of mid-successional species such as Picea glauca. This species, which is tolerant of physico-chemical stresses, not only saw an increase in the number of individuals but also in their biomass. However, the effect of RCW was not universally beneficial. For example, Abies balsamea, a mid- to late-successional species, was negatively affected by competition with dominant herbaceous species such as Tussilago farfara, despite the improved water retention of the substrate due to RCW. At the same time, the addition of topsoil proved highly effective in improving the growth and survival of planted conifers, particularly Pinus bankisana, an early successional species. The addition of organic matter reduced the phytotoxicity of waste rock, notably by reducing the mobility of arsenic, and increased the availability of essential nutrients. Unlike RCW, topsoil showed a significant impact on the growth of planted trees, underlining its potential for rather active and meliorative restoration interventions. The influence of RCW on microbial communities was also explored. RCW promoted bacterial diversity and the abundance of functional groups useful to plants, such as nitrogen-fixing bacteria and some ectomycorrhizal fungi. These microbial communities developed as a function of the physico-chemical properties of the substrates, with a more deterministic response observed in bacteria than in fungi, when organic matter was added to the mineral substrate. However, this work has its limitations, not least the differences between the experimental set-ups and the characteristics of the substrates studied. Future research on broader spatial and temporal scales, as well as a systematic comparison of various substrate enhancement methods, will be required to better understand and generalize the results obtained. This thesis demonstrates the effectiveness of natural colonization and the use of RCW to improve waste rock conditions, thereby promoting colonization by certain pioneer species. The addition of topsoil also offers significant benefits for the growth of planted trees by improving water retention and nutrient availability while reducing phytotoxicity. These results provide practical recommendations for the ecological restoration of waste rock, and open up prospects for future research aimed at optimizing such interventions.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.
