Denne masteroppgaven er en komparativ studie av to arktiske urfolk: innuene i Québec og samene i Norge. Begge disse urfolkene har opplevd kolonisering av deres landområder og en statlig assimileringspolitikk hvor målet var å utrydde deres kultur, språk og identitet. Oppgaven tar for seg konsekvensene koloniseringen og assimileringspolitikken hadde for deres tradisjonelle halvnomadiske liv. Oppgaven er bygd opp av to hoveddeler hvor første del er en historisk gjennom gang av innu og andre del er en gjennomgang av samiskhistorie med sammenligning av de to nevnte urbefolkningene. Koloniseringen av disse folkene skjer på forskjellige tidspunkt, men har likevel mange fellestrekk. Den harde assimileringspolitikken statene velger å gjennomføre skjer derimot på rundt samme tid. Både Canada og Norge ble selvstendige nasjonalstater på 1800-tallet og deres nasjonsbygging fikk store konsekvenser for innuene og samene. Det viktigste våpenet i assimileringspolitikken var å isolere barna fra deres familier, språk og kultur ved å plassere de i internatskoler. Både Canada og Norge har i nyere tid anerkjent at denne politikken har vært et overgrep for urfolkenes kultur, språk og levemåte.
