Abstract
La consolidación del Estado en la Argentina a fin del siglo XIX fue acompañada por un aumento de la inmigración europea. Los museos fueron pensados entonces como instrumentos clave en la fomación de la identidad colectiva ante una población formada en una gran proporción por extranjeros. Los museos más importantes fueron establecidos en Buenos Aires durante este período. No obstante, la creación de los museos no ocurrió sin debates sobre el contenido de las colecciones y la misión de los museos. La fijación de la memoria colectiva sobre la cultura material llevó a disputas que permiten apreciar las diferentes posiciones sobre la naturaleza del patrimonio nacional. Este artículo propone analizar las visiones contradictorias de la representación de la cultura nacional como un intento de cuestionar el consenso en la construcción de la memoria colectiva.
