Abstract
This master's research thesis offers a study of the contemporary history of New York with fiction cinema as a historical source. The corpus of research includes five films: Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976), Fort Apache: the Bronx (Daniel Petrie, 1981), Wall Street (Oliver Stone, 1987), Do the Right Thing (Spike Lee, 1989) and Summer of Sam (Spike Lee, 1999). The chosen research timeline, from 1975 to 1989, is a period of great changes in New York City. Each of these New York fiction films questions this era through social, political, urban and cultural lenses. This dissertation proposes a methodological approach based on different research patterns of animalization, urban and culture. Between decay and vitality, the cinematographic representations of New York from the years 1975-1989 are a unique and original source for historical study.
