Abstract
Deze scriptie richt zich op de geopolitiek van president Mitterrand in de jaren 1980 tot en met de eerste vrije verkiezingen in Oost-Duitsland van 18 maart 1990. Mitterrand was afhankelijk van de internationale verhoudingen van de Koude Oorlog en zat vast aan een Europa gecreërd door de ‘winnaars’ van de Tweede Wereldoorlog – de Verenigde Staten, de Sovjet Unie en het Verenigd Koninkrijk – bij de Conferentie van Yalta van februari 1945. Hij probeerde Frankrijk aan die blokvorming te onttrekken en weer internationaal op de kaart te zetten. De verkiezingen in Oost-Duitsland van maart 1990 markeren het einde van het ‘vraagstuk Duitsland’ en een definitief einde van Yalta.
