L'Amérique demeure un référent privilégié dans la poésie québécoise contemporaine. Remplaçant la poésie du terroir et la rhétorique aux accents nationalistes, une nouvelle poétique américaine s'affirme à partir des années 1980. Elle valorise la thématique de la ville, comme espace ludique et cosmopolite et du voyage transcontinental. Lieu de la diversité mais aussi de la violence et de la solitude, la ville est l'expression du multiculturalisme et du melting-pot. La ville se définit principalement par son appartenance au continent nord-américain. Le poète québécois traverse des métropoles telles que Montréal, New York, Los Angeles ou San Francisco, pour dire ce qui en fait l'espace de référence de l'américanité et de la modernité du vingtième siècle. D'autres villes d'Europe ou d'ailleurs complètent cet imaginaire poétique. Tout en s'écrivant en français, la poésie québécoise des années 1980 à 2000 assimile l'expérience de la Beat Generation (Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs) et underground américaine. L'importance accordée à l'américanité justifie les références culturelles étasuniennes au cinéma, à la littérature, au jazz et au rock. La poésie québécoise des années 1980 à 2000 retrouve néanmoins l'intimité, à travers des " îlots " et des lieux urbains " habitables ", chez Louise Dupré, Hélène Dorion, Jacques Brault et François Charron.
