Abstract
Supposed Spaces is an extended work for orchestra that uses architectural exploration as a wide-reaching metaphor for music composition. The dissertation is in two parts: the orchestral work in full score and an analysis of the work. The analysis first situates Supposed Spaces among other works with relationships to architecture and space. It then discusses the development and application of a flexible system of pitch organization; the creation of contrasting musical environments with specific musical and architectural functions; and the translation of physical concepts such as room dimensions, acoustics and gravity into music. Formal design and the evolution of material are described as they relate to physical movement through the metaphorical architecture. The analysis also expounds the use of memory as a formal device, and the role of directionality and temporality in the work. The conclusion touches on the work's pluralistic compositional approach and points to implications for future compositional exploration.
