Este artículo investiga la penetración del culto de Atenea en Anatolia más allá de las antiguas ciudades griegas establecidas en la línea costera. Un problema mayor es cómo tratar la evidencia numismática; mientras que en las inscripciones en muchas regiones, especialmente en Frigia, casi no hay pruebas de Atenea como receptora de culto, aparece en la moneda de muchas ciudades. Defiendo un acercamiento diferente, el cual permitirá tomar las descripciones de monedas como evidencia de culto solo bajo condiciones específicas. Si tal restricción es aceptada, la presencia de Atenea en Anatolia emerge como muy desigual. Donde ella es más prominente, como Atenea Oreia en Cilicia, su culto había asumido características inusuales, las cuales, quizás son explicadas por el sustrato.
