Abstract
Jack (John Griffith) London (1876-1916) rövidebb-hosszabb műveiben három vidéket, három kultúrát mutatott be olvasóinak, de úgy, hogy a történetek alapjául szolgáló információkat, anyagokat első kézből, a helyszínen szerezte meg. Novelláinak főhősei olyan különleges, vagy éppen alapjában véve hétköznapi, de az események sodrásában különlegessé váló emberek, akik életüket a Yukon vidékén, Kaliforniában, vagy a déli tengereken élték. Számos, az ő korában még kísérletinek minősülő műfajú és szerkezetű írást köszönhetünk neki. Foglalkozott science fictionnel, de írt szerelmi háromszögekről, emberi gyarlóságokról és hősiességről is olyan képszerűséggel és olyan művészi realitással, ahogy előtte még senki. Jelentősek továbbá haditudósításai valamint a szocialista árnyalatú politikai esszéi. A 20. század első másfél évtizedében ő volt az, aki megvalósította az "amerikai álmot": szegény fiúból az irodalom elismert és divatos alakjává változott.
