Le 5-Hydroxyméthylfurfural (HMF) est une substance organique intermédiaire biosourcée très importante dans l'industrie en raison de son potentiel pour la production de biocarburants et d'autres produits à haute valeur ajoutée. Sa production à partir d'hexoses tels que le glucose ou le fructose se fait dans des conditions acides par déshydratation. Cependant, l'utilisation de la biomasse lignocellulosique pour cette production reste limitée en raison de sa complexité structurelle. Cette étude propose de prétraiter la biomasse forestière résiduelle en utilisant l’explosion à la vapeur afin de fragmenter la paroi lignocellulosique et libérer les monosaccharides pour les convertir en HMF et enfin d’isoler ce dernier. Un autre défi majeur dans la production du HMF est son instabilité en milieu aqueux/protique, où il peut se réhydrater en acide lévulinique ou en acide formique, ou encore subir des réactions de condensation pour former des polymères solubles ou insolubles appelés humines. Afin de résoudre cette problématique, un système biphasique est mis au point pour produire le HMF et l’extraire in-situ par un solvant polaire aprotique. Les cétoses tel que le fructose, se déshydratent plus sélectivement. Or la biomasse est riche en glucose. Une étape d'isomérisation du glucose en fructose, avec l'ajout d'un catalyseur acide de Lewis est alors nécessaire. Afin de développer un processus de synthèse efficace du HMF en utilisant une matrice complexe notamment les hémicelluloses comme matière première, une étude approfondie des conditions de fonctionnement du réacteur biphasique est entreprise. Les paramètres tels que le choix du solvant ainsi que de ses ratios par rapport à la phase réactionnelle, la durée de la réaction et la concentration initiale des monosaccharides sont évalués pour optimiser le rendement et la sélectivité de la réaction de conversion des hémicelluloses en HMF. Enfin, des essais d'extraction et de purification du HMF sont réalisés.
