Abstract
Diese Arbeit untersucht die Erinnerungen und den Aufbau von Gedächtnisinhalten der ersten Generation kroatischer Einwanderer in Seattle und Vancouver. Sie konzentriert sich auf die Individuen, die zwischen 1950 und den späten 1980er Jahren ihre Heimat verlassen haben. Mit Hilfe von fünfzehn halbstrukturierten Interviews werden ihre Beweggründe für die Emigration sowie die Art und Weise untersucht, wie ihre Erinnerungen durch Zeit und Distanz geprägt wurden. Darüber hinaus werden ihre einzigartigen Erzählungen beleuchtet, wobei betont wird, wie diese persönlichen Geschichten breitere Muster ihrer Identität, der Bewahrung kultureller Werte und der Komplexität des Zugehörigkeitsgefühls sowohl zu ihrer Heimat als auch zu ihren neuen Ländern widerspiegeln. Die Studie zeigt die Komplexität zwischen individuellen Erfahrungen und dem kollektiven Gedächtnis der kroatischen Diaspora in Nordamerika auf und trägt zu einem tieferen Verständnis darüber bei, wie Erinnerungen die größere Erzählung von Migration und diasporischer Identität formen und von ihr geformt werden.
