Abstract
This article considers the dynamics neonatal, infant and early youth mortality ratios in two Castile-La Mancha provinces, Ciudad Real and Guadalajara, from 1840 to 1899, and reveals what can be known, and what not, about their levels and evolution. Comparing our data obtained from the baptismal and deceased records with another ones from some national and international places, we conclude 1) that we cannot determine the levels, chronology and intensity of neonatal and infant mortality evolution, especially the former; 2) that our sources allow a reasonable measurement of early youth mortality, especially after 1850; and, 3) that the probabilities of dying at 0 months, 0 years and from 1 to 4 years were, in the mid-nineteenth century, greater than those deduced from ecclesiastical records, but their increase in the third quarter of 19th century was lower than these sources show.
