L'articolo esamina alla luce del nuovo meccanismo di incentivazione del conto energia licenziato dal governo italiano nel febbraio 2007 le prospettive di sviluppo del fotovoltaico in Italia. Dopo una analisi attenta e ricca di dati numerici sullo scenario internazionale dell'energia con tutti i dati di riferimento globali, l'autore realizza la fotografia della situazione in Europa, analizzando tra l'altro i modelli di incentivazione e sviluppo delle tecnologie fotovoltaiche in atto in Germania, Spagna e Francia. L'articolo poi passa ad esaminare le prospettive di sviluppo in Italia del fotovoltaico come fonte energetica in grado di contribuire al mix energetico nazionale in misura importante ed in pochi anni, visto la rapidità di realizzazione ed installazione di tali tecnologie che, a differenza delle centrali di potenza basate sui combustibili fossili, possono entrare in esercizio in 18 mesi (incluso l'iter autorizzativo).
