La légitimité est le capital de crédit qu'une oeuvre, un auteur, un courant reçoit de l'institution littéraire à tel moment de l'histoire. Elle se définit en fonction des valeurs littéraires en cours, doit son efficience au taux d'intérêt et de reconnaissance qu'elle suscite dans le monde social et peut se figer dans un processus de consécration, voire de canonisation. Toute œuvre, tout auteur, tout courant se mesure à l'aune des signes de légitimité que lui renvoie l'institution littéraire à travers des instances ad hoc (qui vont de la famille à l'école, en passant par l'éditeur, la critique, les jurys, etc.). La légitimité est donc théoriquement inhérente à la production littéraire, l'oeuvre sécrétant fatalement sa valeur d'usage, d'échange et de reconnaissance. Dans l'économie de marché qui régit la production de la littérature, il se fait néanmoins que c'est le volume de légitimité qui définit la valeur littéraire : les oeuvres (les auteurs) de petite ou de faible légitimité sont celles qui sont reconnues dans leur incapacité à atteindre (ou à rivaliser avec) un niveau d'exigence d'autant plus difficile d'accès qu'il se refuse à toute définition et qu'il relève du jugement social. Au Québec, d'un artiste qui est estimé dans les sphères cultivées, on dit qu'il est « respecté » : l'expression connote tout ensemble reconnaissance, admiration, mais aussi autorité et pouvoir. La notion de légitimité a donc ses frontières. Des frontières floues, mobiles et labiles. Des frontières qui se dessinent aussi en regard de ce qu'elles rejettent ou du moins empêchent de passer. Le légitime n'a de sens qu'en fonction de ce qui ne l'est pas, ne peut l'être, ou ne pourra le devenir qu'au prix d'une reconnaissance marginale ou parallèle.
