Abstract

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a promising technology that has gained popularity in recent years. The affordable cost and deployment flexibility of WSNs allow for new applications. However, the distributed nature of WSNs presents challenges for communication design due to the short transmission range of individual sensor nodes. One solution to this problem is to use Collaborative Beamforming (CB) to transmit data in WSNs. CB is effective in transmitting data over long distances while distributing energy consumption across a group of sensor nodes. CB is an important technique to improve communication and coverage performance in wireless networks. However, there are challenges in terminal placement to maximize CB performance. A new CB solution is proposed to ensure the communication through one or more hops from a source to a receiver via a WSN formed of K terminals, based on the channel estimation error characteristics in monochromatic (line of sight), bi-chromatic or poly-chromatic environments (in the presence of scatterers and reflectors). It is assumed that all terminals, equipped with a single isotropic antenna, are independently and uniformly distributed over a disk located in the same plane containing both the source and the receiver in the first instance, then a known and deterministic WSN is considered (such as a rectangular or square network). Line of sight (LoS) and multi-path phenomena are taken into account, respectively in monochromatic, bichromatic and polychromatic scenarios, where weights are designed to maintain desired power equal to unity while minimizing noise. A closed-form solution is derived using robust CB in monochromatic scenario (RM-DCB) while an asymptotic expression of the weights is presented in robust CB in poly-chromatic scenario (RP-DCB) which ensures quasi-optimal performance. We leverage the law of large numbers based on K to ensure distributed implementation. The resulting performance of our algorithm in tested scenarios is validated by simulations with practical values of the different parameters of interest to prove the robustness and efficiency of the proposed solution. We also present our contributions in the evaluation project of radio interface technology (RITs) and SRITs candidates to the new ITU-R WP 5D IMT-2020 standards within the CEG and ISED mandates, which has been the subject of several publications. Being one of the few research teams that have contributed to this project in Canada, we not only evaluated the different proposed candidates but also proposed new techniques that simplify the complexity of simulations that could take weeks or even months due to machine-to-machine communications (D2D) high computational demand.
