Abstract
Tras la fundación del Círculo de Hacendados de la Isla de Cuba el 20 de enero de 1878 y su transformación a partir de 1903 en "La Liga Agraria", un pequeño grupo de reformadores agrícolas, dirigidos por el médico Francisco de Zayas y Jiménez, contó con un espacio para articular un pensamiento institucional que partía de la participación de la ciencia y la tecnología en función del progreso antillano. Los debates de esta comunidad de agrónomos giraron en torno a la puesta en marcha de la llamada "Segunda Revolución Industrial y Tecnológica", pero adaptada a las condiciones socioeconómicas y políticas de la isla a finales del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. Otro cometido esencial fue consolidada en el país una clase media rural y al logro de ese fin encaminaron sus proyectos y realizaciones, sobre todo en el ámbito de la educación elemental y superior con la formación en la isla de los primeros ingenieros agrónomos y peritos agrícolas.
